Numb stands out because it turns a genuinely disorienting mental-state crisis into something oddly funny, tender, and recognizable—without making light of it. Matthew Perry gives one of his best, most restrained performances, letting the comedy come from the situation while quietly selling the ache of feeling disconnected from your own life. The film’s vibe is offbeat and slightly anxious, like a romantic dramedy seen through a foggy windshield, and its humor (and occasional bite) makes the heavier moments easier to sit with. It won’t be for everyone—it's R-rated, a little uneven, and more introspective than most rom-coms—but if you’re open to a love story that’s as much about getting back to yourself as finding someone else, it’s a surprisingly affecting watch.

Numb is clearly trying to turn a real, scary mental-health experience into an accessible rom-com/drama about reconnecting with life, and Matthew Perry does bring a likable, wounded sincerity that makes the premise easy to lean into. The problem is the movie can’t pick a lane: it keeps tossing in sitcom-style gags and quirky detours that undercut the emotional weight, so the story often feels oddly shallow for its subject and oddly heavy for its jokes. The writing and dialogue can come off predictable and a bit cheesy, and the pacing wanders enough that the “healing journey” doesn’t always land with much impact. If you want a thoughtful, grounded psychological drama, or a consistently funny romantic comedy, this may feel like an awkward compromise—but if you’re a Perry fan and can tolerate tonal whiplash, there are a few earnest moments worth catching.
