Case 39 (2009)

Case 39 is the kind of glossy, nervy thriller that starts with a very human act of compassion and then quietly turns the screws until you’re questioning every comforting assumption you brought in with you. Renée Zellweger makes the social worker at its center feel grounded and decent, which is exactly why the film’s creeping dread hits so hard, and Jodelle Ferland gives a chilling, controlled performance that keeps the unease simmering even in still moments. Director Christian Alvart stages the scares with a slick, lurid confidence—more dark fairy tale than gritty realism—so the movie plays like a fast, nasty bedtime story with sharp teeth. If you like your horror atmospheric, twisty, and a little trashy in the best “I can’t look away” way, it’s a wickedly entertaining ride; if you prefer subtle, slow-burn supernatural drama, this one may feel too bold for its own good.

The problem is it leans hard on familiar genre beats, so the twists feel telegraphed, the scares land softly, and the pacing often drifts when it should be tightening the screws. The dialogue and mythology can also tip into hokey territory, which makes it tough to take seriously if you’re hoping for something sharp or genuinely unsettling. If you’re content with a glossy, mid-2000s studio horror ride and can enjoy it as a slightly silly comfort-watch, there are a few creepy images and a committed performance or two—but if you want originality, tension, or real dread, this probably isn’t your time well spent.
