I Want Candy (2007)

What makes I Want Candy unexpectedly winning is how it turns a potentially sleazy premise into a buoyant, warm-hearted backstage farce about ambition, friendship, and the humiliations that come with trying to “make it” before you know what you’re doing. Tom Riley and Tom Burke play off each other with terrific, jittery charm, giving the film a real pulse as it zips through London hustles, creative delusions, and one increasingly chaotic production that keeps slipping out of their control. The tone is cheerful and shamelessly smutty—more lad-comedy embarrassment than dark satire—and it’s genuinely entertaining in the way it finds human sweetness amid the innuendo. That said, it’s definitely not for the prudish: the R-rated sexual content is front and center, but if you can laugh at awkwardness and root for likable underdogs, it’s an easy, rowdy good time.

I Want Candy is aiming for a cheeky, behind-the-scenes satire about naïve film students learning how the industry really works, and it does have a few energetic moments and a game cast willing to lean into the silliness. The problem is it mostly plays like a predictable, derivative sex farce, with clichéd audition gags and a “things spiral out of control” plot you can see coming a mile away. The humor is broad and often crudely executed, and the pacing can feel tedious when it keeps circling the same porn-industry jokes without sharper writing to justify them. If you’re not already comfortable with constant sexual references and a knowingly trashy tone, this one will feel more awkward than funny; if you are, you’ll probably get a few laughs and move on without thinking about it again.
