The Comebacks (2007)
Out-of-luck coach Lambeau Fields takes a rag-tag bunch of college misfits and drives them towards the football championships. In the process, this life-long loser discovers that he is a winner after all by redeeming himself, saving his relationship with his family and friends, and finding that there is indeed, no "I" in "team"!
What people think about The Comebacks
The Comebacks is a full-contact spoof of every underdog sports movie you’ve ever seen, played with such shameless commitment that the clichés become the punchlines and the punchlines keep coming. David Koechner barrels through the role of a chronically losing coach with the kind of sweaty, desperate bravado that makes the film’s anything-goes energy feel oddly contagious, while Carl Weathers’ knowing narration keeps the whole thing winking at the audience. The vibe is loud, silly, and proudly juvenile—more locker-room riffing than inspirational speech—so if you’re allergic to crude jokes or want your football stories earnest, it may wear you out. But if you’re in the mood for an irreverent, reference-packed comedy that treats sports-movie sincerity like a piñata, this one is an easy pick for a low-stakes, high-laugh night.
The Comebacks is trying to be a broad, anything-goes spoof of inspirational football movies, stacking clichés on top of clichés and daring you to laugh at how dumb it all is. The problem is the comedy leans heavily on groin jokes, crude innuendo, and loud randomness, so if that brand of humor doesn’t hit for you, the whole thing can feel like a long highlight reel of missed punchlines. David Koechner commits to the bit and there are a few knowingly silly moments, but the parody is so lazy and repetitive that it rarely builds into anything sharper. If you want clever satire or even a genuinely feel-good sports underdog story, this probably isn’t your team; if you’re in the mood for lowbrow, juvenile gags with zero subtlety, you might tolerate it.
