The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is a surprisingly warm, consistently funny showbiz comedy that takes the gaudy sparkle of Vegas magic and uses it to poke at ego, fame, and the desperate need to stay “relevant” without ever losing its sense of play. Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi make a wonderfully mismatched duo whose friendship feels lived-in beneath the sequins, while Olivia Wilde brings a grounded charm that keeps the movie from floating away on pure shtick. And then there’s the supporting firepower: Jim Carrey goes gloriously unhinged as a rival magician, and Alan Arkin strolls in with the kind of deadpan gravitas that turns simple scenes into little comic gems. It’s definitely not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to crude, raunchy gags, but if you’re in the mood for big laughs with a surprisingly sincere soft spot for the joy of performing, this one earns its applause.
