Kid Cannabis (2014)

Kid Cannabis has the crackling, reckless momentum of a true-life tall tale told at closing time—funny, fast, and just grounded enough to sting when the laughs catch in your throat. John Stockwell keeps the vibe loose and slightly manic, letting the story ride on youthful bravado and bad decisions without turning it into a lecture, while Jonathan Daniel Brown and Kenny Wormald make the central friendship feel lived-in rather than scripted. The movie’s real ace is Ron Perlman, who drops in with the kind of lived-wisdom edge that makes every scene feel sharper and more dangerous. It’s not for viewers who want a sober, procedural crime drama (and there’s a lot of onscreen weed use), but if you’re in the mood for an energetic, performance-driven ride about ambition outrunning common sense, it’s an easy watch to recommend.

Kid Cannabis is clearly aiming for a scrappy, “true story” cautionary tale about a naive kid chasing fast money and the chaos that follows, with a bit of stoner swagger on top. The problem is the execution: the voice-over tries to sell you on the ride but can feel forced, and the movie wobbles between breezy comedy and darker crime drama without smoothing the transition. A lot of the beats land in familiar “rise-and-fall” territory, so if you’re hoping for sharp writing or a fresh take on the drug-trade genre, this may feel like a rehash. Still, if you’re okay with constant weed use on screen and you mainly want an easy, low-stakes watch with a few energetic moments and some colorful supporting turns, it can pass the time.
