Everybody's Fine (2009)

Everybody’s Fine is special because it takes a familiar “family reunion” premise and turns it into something quietly piercing—a road movie powered less by destinations than by the ache of what goes unsaid. Robert De Niro gives one of his most human performances as Frank Goode, a widower whose stubborn, gentle determination makes every encounter feel earned, and the film lets its emotions creep up on you rather than forcing a big speech. The vibe is tender and bittersweet, with a steady undercurrent of melancholy as each stop reveals the gap between the lives we advertise and the lives we actually live. It does deal with heavy subjects and some rough edges—language, illness, and family secrets—so it’s not a comfort watch, but if you’re in the mood for a heartfelt drama that treats its characters with empathy, it lands with a lingering, honest grace.

Everybody’s Fine is clearly aiming for a tender, middle-aged road-trip tearjerker about grief, parenting, and the gap between who we are and who we pretend to be. The problem is it often takes the safest, most predictable route to get there, leaning hard on sentimentality and “big emotional reveals” that can feel engineered rather than earned. De Niro gives the film real warmth and watchability, and a few scenes land because the premise is relatable, but the supporting characters are sketched too broadly for the family drama to hit as deeply as it wants to. If you’re allergic to schmaltz or you want nuanced, messy realism instead of a formula that nudges you toward tears, this probably isn’t your best use of an evening.
