Deep Winter (2009)
Maverick downhill racer, Tyler Crowe, reunites with best friend and renegade snowboarder, Mark Rider. It doesn't take long for the old friends to take on a new mission. Together they head to Alaska, where led by a veteran guide, the two attempt the most daring descent on snow ever caught on film. But with glory comes risk. And this challenge is no exception.
What people think about Deep Winter
Deep Winter earns its keep on the strength of pure, high-altitude exhilaration: it drops you into Alaska’s vast, unforgiving beauty and lets the camera linger just long enough for awe to turn into adrenaline. The skiing and snowboarding sequences feel tactile and dangerous, shot with a crisp, kinetic eye that makes every ridge line and whiteout run look like a dare you can’t quite refuse. Eric Lively and Kellan Lutz bring an easy, competitive buddy energy that keeps the human stakes tethered to the spectacle, while the thriller edge quietly builds as ambition starts to outpace caution. If you’re looking for a character-heavy drama you may find it lean, but if you want a PG-13 action-adventure that plays like a love letter to extreme sports—and the risks behind the glory—this is a bracing ride.
Deep Winter wants to be a high-altitude adrenaline ride about ego, friendship, and the seductive stupidity of chasing the “sickest” descent on camera. The problem is the story around those stunts is thin and painfully predictable, with melodrama and pacing lulls that make the danger feel more like a checklist than a gut-punch. If you’re not already into skiing/snowboarding culture and the whole extreme-sports-video vibe, you’ll likely find yourself waiting for the next mountain shot rather than caring what happens to the characters. That said, the Alaskan scenery and action sequences can deliver some genuine thrills, so it works best as a casual watch for snow-sport fans, not anyone looking for a tight thriller.
