My Best Friend (2006)

My Best Friend is the kind of French comedy that sneaks up on you: it starts with a deliciously petty wager and ends up revealing something tender about how hard it can be to actually let someone into your life. Patrice Leconte keeps the tone light and droll, but he gives Daniel Auteuil room to play a man whose polish can’t quite hide his loneliness, while Dany Boon’s irresistibly openhearted taxi driver brings warmth, wit, and a surprisingly poignant humanity to every scene. The laughs come from social awkwardness and character contrast rather than cheap gags, and the movie’s charm lies in watching two very different people circle each other, clash, and gradually connect. If you prefer broad, fast-paced comedy you may find it a touch contrived, but if you’re in the mood for something funny that also leaves a small, sincere glow behind, this is an easy bet.

My Best Friend is aiming for a warm, old-school French crowd-pleaser about a prickly man learning how to actually connect, and it mostly runs on the charm of Daniel Auteuil and the likable, chatty energy Dany Boon brings as the taxi driver. The problem is the setup feels engineered from the start, so a lot of scenes play like stepping-stones to an outcome you can see coming a mile away rather than discoveries that surprise you. If you’re allergic to contrived bets, conveniently timed emotional turns, and a story that keeps things safely upbeat instead of digging into messier consequences, this will probably feel slight. If you want something gentle, easy to watch, and carried by two strong performers even when the plot is doing the heavy lifting, it can still be a pleasant enough ride.
