Primeval (2007)

Primeval is at its best when it leans into a deliciously pulpy promise: a real-world “monster hunt” where the monster is nature itself—huge, patient, and terrifyingly plausible. Michael Katleman stages the action with a gritty, on-location urgency that makes the riverbanks feel hostile long before the crocodile shows up, and the film smartly folds in the chaos of a war-torn region to keep the danger coming from more than one direction. Dominic Purcell, Brooke Langton, and Orlando Jones give the newsroom-team setup a grounded, human energy, so the suspense lands as more than just creature-feature mechanics. It is rough, mean, and very R-rated—graphic violence, ugliness, and dread are part of the package—so it won’t be for everyone, but if you want a brisk, nasty survival thriller with a killer hook and a primal bite, it delivers.

Primeval wants to be a gritty, ripped-from-the-headlines creature feature with a side of “journalists in a war zone,” and on paper that’s a solid, nasty little premise. The problem is it can’t decide whether it’s a killer-croc thriller or a heavy political drama, so the tone lurches around and the script leans on thin character work and choppy pacing to connect the dots. The violence is harsh and the film uses real-world suffering as backdrop, which may feel exploitative rather than meaningful, especially given the broad stereotypes and uneven casting. If you’re here purely for dumb, fun monster mayhem, you’ll probably find it too grim and messy; if you want thoughtful commentary, it’s not sharp enough to earn that weight—though the occasional suspense beat and “nature is the villain” setup do deliver in brief bursts.
