If you’re sensitive to stories centered on abuse, exploitation, and spiraling self-destruction, this can be an exhausting sit, and if you prefer grounded character depth over operatic tragedy, you may find it hollow. Still, Miki Nakatani commits completely and the direction is undeniably bold, so if you like maximalist, surreal tragedy that hits you with beauty and bruises at the same time, it may be exactly your kind of ordeal.
