Vice (2008)

Vice (2008) has the scruffy, late-night grit of a crime paperback brought to life, powered by a committed Michael Madsen performance that makes Max Walker feel less like a movie cop and more like a man slowly realizing the job has hollowed him out. The film’s hook isn’t just the cartel heat or the body count—it’s the uneasy moral fog that settles in after one bad decision, and how the dialogue and character dynamics keep tightening the noose as trust erodes within the department. Daryl Hannah brings a sharp, wary edge that plays beautifully against Madsen’s bruised narration, and the conspiracy angle gives the thriller engine a satisfying, paranoid churn without needing flashy tricks. It’s not for everyone—this is an R-rated, rough-around-the-edges ride with explicit content and a familiar framework—but if you like hardboiled performances and a grimy sense of consequence, it’s an absorbing watch.

Vice is clearly aiming for a grimy, hard-boiled cop thriller about corruption, guilt, and bodies dropping as the conspiracy tightens, and on paper that’s a perfectly serviceable lane. The problem is it plays like a bargain-bin remix of better crime films, with murky storytelling, uneven pacing, and writing that too often confuses “dark” with “incoherent.” The production values don’t help, making key moments feel cheaper than they should, which undercuts any tension the movie is trying to build. If you’re mainly here for Michael Madsen’s weary tough-guy vibe and you don’t mind sleaze, nudity, and blunt violence in a low-rent package, you might get something out of it—but if you want a sharp, tightly plotted thriller, this probably isn’t your night.
