Planet 51 wins you over with a delightfully flipped sci‑fi premise: instead of humans fearing aliens, it’s a sunny, 1950s-suburbia alien world that treats the astronaut like the monster, and that reversal fuels a steady stream of clever sight gags and affectionate genre nods. The animation is bright and inviting, the pacing zips along with chase-and-hide adventure energy, and the central friendship has an earnest sweetness that keeps the comedy from feeling mean-spirited. Dwayne Johnson’s square-jawed hero act plays nicely against Seann William Scott’s jittery every-alien charm, with Jessica Biel adding a grounded warmth that helps the movie feel more than just a parody. It’s not for everyone—there are a few juvenile, suggestive jokes and some mild peril—but if you’re on the fence and want a light, colorful family sci‑fi romp with a surprisingly big heart, this one is easy to enjoy.

The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar animated beats—chase, hide, misunderstandings, big rescue—without enough fresh ideas to justify that clever premise, and the characters rarely rise above stock types.
