License to Wed is the kind of broad, breezy studio comedy that lives or dies on comic escalation, and here it’s powered by a deliciously mischievous Robin Williams turning premarital counseling into a three-week gauntlet of tests, rules, and gleeful boundary-crossing. Ken Kwapis keeps the pace light and the gags coming, letting John Krasinski’s everyman frustration and Mandy Moore’s earnest warmth play off a parade of outlandish assignments—especially the famously unsettling robot babies, which are funny long enough to earn their culty reputation. The vibe is sunny, slightly chaotic, and knowingly ridiculous, more about watching a couple get stress-tested than about any deep realism, with PG-13 innuendo that stays on the mild side. If you want subtle romance or a gentler sense of humor, this might feel pushy and cartoonish—but if you’re in the mood for a comfort-food comedy with a big comic engine and a few memorable set pieces, it’s an easy yes.

License to Wed is clearly aiming for a goofy rom-com about premarital jitters and the idea that marriage takes work, using an over-the-top pastor as the chaos engine. The problem is the “tests” and invasions of privacy are so forced and mean-spirited on paper that the comedy often lands as awkward rather than funny, and the characters end up reacting to plot contrivances instead of feeling like real people. Robin Williams brings energy and a few lively moments, and Krasinski and Moore are likable enough, but the script keeps flattening them into predictable beats and silly misunderstandings. If you want a warm, believable romance or sharp comedy, this will probably irritate you; if you can tolerate broad, sitcom-style humiliation humor and just want something lightweight in the background, it might do the job.
