Set against misty Scottish shores during wartime, it mixes cozy humor and sweeping adventure with visual effects that feel tactile and alive, making the legendary creature less a gimmick than a presence you genuinely care about. Alex Etel and Emily Watson give the story a warm, lived-in center, so the spectacle never drowns out the human heartbeat underneath. It’s gentler and more earnest than today’s snarkier family fare—and if you prefer your fantasy darker or faster, it may feel quaint—but if you’re open to a heartfelt, big-sky tale about courage and letting go, it’s a lovely watch.

The Water Horse is clearly trying to be a warm, old-fashioned family fable about grief, friendship, and Scottish myth, with a lovable creature at the center. The problem is it leans hard on familiar beats, so you can often see the “lesson” and the next plot turn coming a mile away. The tonal mix can also feel awkward: one minute it’s cuddly kid-and-pet antics, the next it’s wartime peril and artillery, and the transitions aren’t always smooth. Still, the Loch Ness setting is gorgeous and the creature effects have charm, so if you want a gentle, sentimental adventure for younger kids, it’ll do the job—but if you’re allergic to formula or want a consistently grounded tone, this may test your patience.
