Love & Other Drugs is clearly trying to be a sexy rom-com, a jab at Big Pharma, and a sincere drama about living with illness—and on paper that’s a great cocktail. The problem is the movie keeps switching glasses: it jumps from raunchy banter to heavy emotional beats so abruptly that it can feel like two different films fighting for control, which hurts the pacing and makes some character turns feel more convenient than earned. If you want a consistently grounded romance or a sharp, focused satire, this may frustrate you, and the very explicit sex and nudity are not remotely optional background noise. Still, Gyllenhaal and Hathaway have real chemistry and enough charm to carry the better scenes, so if you’re fine with a messy tone in exchange for strong leads and a bittersweet love story, you might get what you came for.
