Friday the 13th (2009) understands the assignment: it’s a lean, mean slasher that wastes no time getting you back to Crystal Lake and letting dread do the talking. Marcus Nispel shoots the woods with a slick, grimy immediacy, and the movie builds a steady rhythm of stalk-and-strike suspense that lands its shocks with crowd-pleasing efficiency. If you’re on the fence because you want a horror film that delivers exactly what the title promises—brutal set pieces, nasty gore, and a simple, propulsive ride—this one is an easy yes. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to R-rated sex, drugs, and bloodletting, but for slasher fans it plays like a greatest-hits album with the volume turned all the way up.

Friday the 13th (2009) is trying to deliver a slick, modernized Jason showcase—fast pace, nasty kills, and a back-to-basics slasher vibe at Crystal Lake. The problem is it mostly plays like a greatest-hits remix: thin characters you’re not meant to care about, lots of loud jump moments, and a heavy dose of sex/nudity that can feel more obligatory than scary. If you want suspense, originality, or anyone to root for, this will probably feel empty and a bit mechanical. If, however, you’re here purely for brutal, efficient slasher set pieces and a meaner, more active Jason, it does hit that target.
