Margot at the Wedding (2007)

Margot at the Wedding is one of those rare comedies that earns its laughs the hard way: by telling the truth, even when the truth is jagged, petty, and painfully recognizable. Noah Baumbach directs with an intelligent, subtle hand, letting conversations curl into little traps and revelations, and the sharp dialogue lands like a compliment that might also be a knife. Nicole Kidman is terrific as Margot—brilliant, brittle, and compulsively honest—surrounded by performances that feel lived-in rather than performed, giving the whole film the intimate sting of eavesdropping on a family that can’t stop hurting each other. It’s not for viewers who want warm reconciliation or easy likability, but if you’re drawn to honest, thought-provoking drama that’s subversively funny in the way real life can be, it’s a bracing, memorable watch.

Margot at the Wedding is clearly aiming for a painfully honest, darkly funny autopsy of family relationships, where every conversation is a tiny knife fight dressed up as small talk. If you need someone to root for or even simply like, this will feel like being trapped at a weekend gathering with people who weaponize honesty and never stop talking. The film runs more on mood and uncomfortable character exposure than on a satisfying story arc, so it can come off tedious or even “what was the point?” if you’re expecting clear narrative payoff. That said, the performances and razor-edged dialogue are often excellent, and if you enjoy cringe comedy and emotional messiness with zero cushioning, it may hit exactly the nerve it’s going for.
