Haeckel's Tale (2006)

Haeckel’s Tale is the kind of horror that feels like a forbidden story told too close to a candle flame: lurid, literary, and uncommonly bold for a TV movie, with John McNaughton staging it like a grim parable about grief and the human need to outrun death. Its framing device—a desperate widower listening to a necromancer—gives the film an old-world, campfire-gothic vibe, while the central tale leans into decadent, corpse-strewn Grand Guignol with a straight face and a craftsman’s sense of escalation. If you like your horror nasty, atmospheric, and unapologetically transgressive, it delivers memorable imagery and a queasy sense of doom that lingers. It’s absolutely not for everyone—its sexualized necromancy and grotesque shocks are a hard line for many—but for viewers who can handle extreme subject matter, it’s a daring, nightmarish curiosity that earns its reputation as one of the more infamous entries in modern anthology horror.

Haeckel’s Tale is clearly aiming for old-school, EC Comics-style shock horror: a campfire framing story about grief and temptation that dives straight into taboo, body-horror territory. The problem is that the “edgy” centerpiece (sex and violence involving corpses, plus a particularly nasty infant gag) is so relentlessly gross that it can drown out any atmosphere or character work, leaving you feeling more pummeled than scared. As a TV-movie, it also has a slightly stagey, low-budget look that may not sell the big, grotesque ideas as convincingly as it wants to. If you like lurid anthology horror and can stomach extreme sexual grotesquerie, there’s some pulpy fun and a committed nastiness here—but if you’re even mildly squeamish or looking for tasteful supernatural chills, this one will feel like a dare you didn’t agree to.
