The Countess (2009)

The Countess is a rare period thriller that feels less like a lurid legend and more like a feverish, elegantly mounted descent into obsession, where beauty and rot share the same candlelight. Julie Delpy directs with a cool, burnished eye—sumptuous costumes and shadowy interiors don’t just decorate the story, they tighten it, while her music hums underneath like a guilty pulse. Delpy’s performance gives Erzsébet Báthory a tragic, unnerving humanity, and the film’s mystery-minded angle keeps you watching not only for what happened, but for who benefits from the story being told. It is intense and sometimes bloody, with sexual content and disturbing images, so it won’t be for everyone—but if you like historical dramas that dare to be sensual, sinister, and morally complicated, this one has teeth.

The Countess is clearly aiming for a classy, feminist-leaning reframe of the Erzsébet Báthory legend—part historical drama, part gothic nightmare, with a “was she monster or scapegoat?” angle. The problem is the storytelling often feels stiff and emotionally disconnected, so her descent into obsession plays more like a series of grim tableaux than a convincing psychological spiral. It’s also not the kind of horror that’s “fun” or propulsive: the pacing can be slow, the dialogue can land awkwardly, and the violence/sexual content is intense enough to feel punishing if you’re not fully on board. If you’re here for a tight thriller or a genuinely scary ride, you may leave bored or frustrated, but if you can tolerate a chilly, art-house approach, Delpy’s commitment and the period atmosphere do give it some bite.
