Thomas Mignone weaves intersecting lives with real ambition, letting the structure tighten like a noose as damaged people orbit the sex trade, trauma, and the desperate need to feel in control of something. The film’s gritty visual style and raw, committed performances—especially Brittany Snow’s—give it a pulse that’s more lived-in than sensational, even when it’s at its most lurid. It’s absolutely not for everyone given the explicit, disturbing subject matter, but if you can handle a bleak, uncompromising ride, it’s memorable in the way the best midnight dramas are: unsettling, purposeful, and hard to dismiss.

On the Doll is clearly trying to be an unflinching, interconnected portrait of how childhood sexual abuse echoes into adulthood through the sex trade, addiction, and violence, and it doesn’t shy away from ugly realities.
