CHiPs (2017)

CHiPs is the kind of brash, sun-baked action-comedy that knows exactly what it is: a buddy-cop joyride fueled by roaring motorcycle chases, shameless jokes, and the easy, lived-in chemistry between Michael Peña and Dax Shepard. It zips through Los Angeles with a playful, slightly raunchy energy, letting the crime plot do its job while the real pleasure comes from watching two mismatched officers bicker, bond, and somehow become a team you want to root for. Shepard directs with a breezy confidence, staging set pieces that are more fun than fancy and giving Peña plenty of room to steal scenes with charm and timing. Fair warning, it’s unapologetically crude and often violent, so if you don’t like your laughs loud and your comedy R-rated, this won’t convert you—but if you’re on the fence and want an easy, rowdy Friday-night watch, it delivers.

The problem is it leans so hard on lowbrow sex jokes and familiar action-comedy beats that the plot feels like a checklist rather than a ride, and the tonal swings between goofy and grim can be jarring. If you’re hoping for the breezy charm of the original show or a genuinely clever comedy, this will likely feel lazy and oddly mean-spirited at times. On the plus side, Michael Peña brings energy and the chase work has some punch—so if you just want raunchy, noisy escapism and can stomach graphic violence and heavy sexual content, you might get what you came for.
