Destricted (2006)

Destricted is special because it treats explicit sexuality not as titillation, but as raw material for artists to cut, sculpt, and interrogate—an anthology where the question isn’t “how far will it go?” so much as “what does this reveal?” The film’s best moments have a bracing, gallery-installation vibe: provocative, experimental, sometimes funny, sometimes unsettling, and often surprisingly thoughtful in how image, sound, and editing reshape what we think we’re seeing. It is, honestly, up-and-down—some shorts feel sharper and more resonant than others, with Larry Clark’s segment often emerging as the most compelling—but the variety is part of the point, like walking through rooms curated to challenge different nerves. If you’re on the fence, know this isn’t for the prudish or the squeamish (it’s graphically explicit), but for adventurous viewers it’s a rare chance to watch cinema push into the uncomfortable borderland where art and desire argue with each other.

Destricted is clearly trying to spark a highbrow conversation about where pornography ends and art begins, using a roster of famous artists to give explicit sexuality a conceptual frame. The problem is that a lot of the segments feel more like gallery provocations than compelling films—repetitive, emotionally distant, and oddly tame once the shock factor wears off. If you’re looking for romance, character-driven drama, or even a coherent thesis, this will likely feel like 117 minutes of “ideas” without much insight or payoff. That said, if you’re comfortable with extremely graphic, real-sex imagery and you enjoy experimental anthologies where mood and provocation matter more than story, a few shorts do have striking visuals and a committed, confrontational tone.
