The Fifth Commandment (2008)
In Bangkok, an assassin who turns down a job that hits too close to home finds himself targeted by the elite members of his profession
What people think about The Fifth Commandment
The Fifth Commandment is the kind of lean, streetwise action thriller that knows exactly what it wants to be: a stylish Bangkok-set ride where every scene seems to build toward the next burst of kinetic mayhem. It moves with solid pacing and a pulpy confidence, paying affectionate homage to classic martial-arts cinema while still feeling slick and modern in its attitude. The fights land with a fierce, satisfying clarity, and the crime-world cat-and-mouse tension keeps the engine humming without drowning you in exposition. If you’re looking for a smart, talky character study, this may not be your stop—but if you want an entertaining, no-nonsense action fix with real punch, it delivers.
The Fifth Commandment wants to be a slick Bangkok-set hitman thriller about professional codes, betrayal, and what happens when a job gets personal. The problem is it plays like a bargain-bin remix of better assassin movies: the plot is telegraphed early, the dialogue lands with a thud, and the action often feels awkwardly staged rather than tense or stylish. Rick Yune has the look for the role, but the performance comes off stiff, which makes it harder to care when the heat turns up. If you’re only after a straightforward time-killer with a moody setting and a few genre beats, you might get by, but if you want sharp choreography, surprises, or real suspense, this probably isn’t for you.
