Suburbicon (2017)

Suburbicon is the kind of glossy, poison-apple satire that looks like a postcard from 1950s suburbia and tastes like something far sharper, using immaculate cinematography to lure you into a world where manners are pristine and morals are not. It plays like a noir-ish thriller filtered through pitch-black comedy, letting ordinary smiles curdle into suspicion, greed, and the quiet panic of keeping up appearances. If you enjoy stories that skewer the American dream with a wicked grin—and don’t mind a tone that’s deliberately meaner and stranger than its “perfect neighborhood” façade—this one can feel like a misunderstood treat. It won’t be for viewers expecting a straightforward crime drama, but if you’re in the mood for stylish darkness and uneasy laughs, Suburbicon is easy to sink into.

Suburbicon is clearly aiming for a slick, Coen-esque satire of 1950s suburbia where a “perfect” neighborhood curdles into crime, hypocrisy, and violence. The problem is it can’t decide whether it wants to be a dark comedy, a straight thriller, or a social critique, and that tonal tug-of-war leaves the story feeling oddly shapeless and the humor more strained than sharp. The characters are intentionally nasty, but the film doesn’t give you enough wit or momentum to make spending time with them feel rewarding, and the racial subplot—important on paper—never fully clicks with the main narrative. If you like bleak, cynical stories and can enjoy good performances and period atmosphere even when the film doesn’t cohere, you might get something out of it; otherwise, it may just feel like a messy missed opportunity.
