Director Sheldon Wilson gives the mayhem an eerie, rural atmosphere—windy fields, uneasy silences, and then sudden, chaotic attacks—while Sean Patrick Flanery anchors the whole thing with a grounded, end-of-the-line sheriff vibe that keeps the B-movie thrills feeling urgent. It’s knowingly in conversation with classic “nature strikes back” horror, delivering crunchy set pieces and a steady escalation without getting bogged down in self-seriousness. If you’re allergic to creature-feature logic or you want prestige horror, this won’t convert you—but if you’re on the fence and crave an effective, atmospheric killer-bird ride, Kaw is an easy yes.

Kaw is clearly aiming for a small-town creature-feature throwback in the vein of The Birds, mixing a sheriff’s last-day-on-the-job setup with a “nature fights back” outbreak angle. The problem is it rarely builds real suspense—scenes often feel like they’re stalling between attacks, and a side plot about the ravens’ origins adds explanation without adding much tension. The gore is there, but it’s more blunt than scary, and the whole thing can feel like a TV-movie riff rather than a sharp, original thriller.
