Jumper (2008)

Jumper is the kind of high-concept thrill ride that hooks you with a simple, delicious “what if?”—what if you could vanish from a bad life and reappear anywhere on Earth in the blink of an eye—and then uses that power to sling you through a globe-trotting chase with real snap. Doug Liman keeps the movie moving like it’s got somewhere urgent to be, turning teleportation into a physical, kinetic spectacle where every jump feels like a punchline and a punch at once. Hayden Christensen plays David with a cocky, restless edge that fits a guy who’s never had to live with boundaries, while Samuel L. Jackson brings sharp, relentless menace as the zealot determined to make him pay for that freedom. It’s not a deep-dive character study and the mythology is more pulpy than polished, but if you want brisk sci-fi action with a genuinely fun central idea and the momentum to carry you straight through, this one delivers.

Jumper is clearly trying to be a slick, globe-trotting superhero thriller where the joy comes from the sheer fantasy of teleporting anywhere and outrunning a shadowy organization. The problem is it often feels like a highlight reel of cool locations and action beats stitched together with thin character work, clunky dialogue, and a story that keeps skipping the emotional and logical steps that would make you care. Hayden Christensen has the look for a restless antihero and Samuel L. Jackson brings some bite, but even they can’t fully sell motivations that the script barely builds. If you can switch your brain off and just enjoy the concept and the momentum, you’ll get some fun set pieces; if you want coherent world-building, believable relationships, or a satisfying narrative arc, this will likely frustrate you.
