Gregory Hoblit stages a sleek duel of minds between Anthony Hopkins’ icy, unshakable Theodore Crawford and Ryan Gosling’s hungry, fast-rising prosecutor, and the movie gets a charge from watching each man test the other’s limits. It’s smart and stylish without feeling showy, building tension through precision—small choices, sharp dialogue, and the creeping realization that “open-and-shut” cases rarely are.
