First Sunday (2008)
Durell and LeeJohn are best friends and bumbling petty criminals. When told they have one week to pay a $17,000 debt or Durell will lose his son, they come up with a desperate scheme to rob their neighborhood church. Instead, they end up spending the night in the presence of the Lord and are forced to deal with much more than they bargained for.
What people think about First Sunday
First Sunday is the kind of comedy that sneaks up on you: it starts with a goofy, high-stakes scheme and gradually reveals a surprisingly warm, community-centered heart beating underneath the jokes. Ice Cube plays the straight man with weary conviction while Tracy Morgan and Katt Williams bring the jittery, unpredictable energy that keeps every scene lively, especially once the story corrals everyone into one church and lets personalities clash, bond, and soften. The vibe is loud, rowdy, and unapologetically crowd-pleasing, but it’s also willing to pause for a few sincere moments about pride, family, and the strange grace of being forced to sit still and listen. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to broad humor or uneven pacing, yet if you like comedies that end up feeling like a neighborhood block party, this one earns its charm.
First Sunday wants to be a rowdy, streetwise comedy with a big heart, using the church-robbery setup to push two screwups toward something like redemption. The problem is it often plays like two different movies fighting for the same runtime: broad Katt Williams/Tracy Morgan bits on one side, and a soft, sermon-y lesson on the other, with a very predictable path between them. The script doesn’t squeeze enough cleverness out of the premise, and the logic gets wobbly whenever it needs to force a heartfelt moment, so if you’re expecting a tight heist comedy or consistent laughs, you’ll probably feel shortchanged. Still, if you’re in the mood for a light, PG-13 crowd-pleaser with a few funny performances and a feel-good, faith-adjacent message, it can go down easy.
