Fly Me to the Moon (2008)
Three young houseflies stow away aboard the Apollo 11 flight to the moon.
What people think about Fly Me to the Moon
Fly Me to the Moon is a small, whimsical idea with a big, crowd-pleasing hook: it turns the Apollo 11 mission into a kid-friendly thrill ride by letting three tiny stowaways experience history from the most unlikely front-row seat imaginable. Director Ben Stassen leans hard into what the movie does best—bright, buoyant animation and a real sense of visual depth—so the rockets, control rooms, and lunar vistas feel less like a lesson and more like an amusement-park attraction built around wonder. The tone is light and earnest, with a dash of slapstick and mild gross-out humor, and Tim Curry’s villainy adds just enough spice to keep the adventure humming. It won’t be for everyone if you’re sensitive to repeated weight jokes or you want Pixar-level storytelling, but if you’re on the fence and craving a family movie that’s genuinely fun to look at and easy to enjoy, this one has lift-off charm.
Fly Me to the Moon wants to be a cute, kid-friendly “secret passengers on Apollo 11” adventure with a dash of history and a big, inspiring sense of wonder. The problem is the storytelling feels thin and overly familiar, with jokes that lean juvenile (and occasionally mean-spirited about a character’s weight) and a sugary tone that can get cloying fast. The pacing lumbers between set pieces, and the “gimmick” energy can’t hide how little there is for older kids or adults to latch onto beyond the premise. If you’ve got very young children who’ll enjoy colorful animation and simple heroics, it may pass the time; if you’re hoping for clever writing or broadly appealing family fun, this probably isn’t your launch.
