Homo Erectus (2007)

Homo Erectus is a cheerfully dumb, oddly sweet prehistoric comedy that commits to its silly premise: what if the tribe’s biggest problem wasn’t survival, but a would-be genius trying to sell everyone on spoons and toothbrushes. Adam Rifkin plays Ishbo with an underdog sincerity that makes the caveman crudity feel more playful than mean-spirited, and the movie leans into quick gags, goofy invention failures, and blink-and-you’ll-miss-them cameos with the relaxed confidence of a late-night cable favorite. The vibe is broad, bawdy, and intentionally anachronistic, with just enough romantic frustration and clan rivalry to keep the jokes moving without turning it into a real adventure. It’s definitely not for viewers who hate raunch or lowbrow humor, but if you’re in the mood for lightweight Stone Age nonsense with a surprisingly likable loser at the center, it’s an easy watch.

Homo Erectus is aiming for a goofy Stone Age rom-com where a brainy underdog tries to drag his tribe into “civilization” one flimsy invention at a time, with a side of raunchy caveman courtship. The problem is the comedy often feels stuck at the sketch level—lots of crude gags and broad mugging without the punchlines landing, and the pacing can make the whole thing feel more primitive than intentionally retro. If you’re expecting clever satire or a consistently funny R-rated comedy, this may test your patience, but if you can tolerate low-budget roughness and you enjoy dumb, juvenile humor with some slapstick violence, you might squeeze out a few laughs. Ali Larter and a couple of supporting bits add some charm, but they can’t fully rescue a script that too often mistakes noise for jokes.
