Space Chimps (2008)

Space Chimps is the kind of breezy, old-school animated adventure that wins you over with sheer good humor: it doesn’t try to reinvent the galaxy, it just aims to be a lively ride and largely pulls it off. The movie’s secret weapon is its playful comic rhythm—Andy Samberg’s Ham III brings a modern, wisecracking energy, while the film keeps the momentum up with puns, slapstick, and bright, kid-friendly sci-fi spectacle. The vibe is colorful and mischievous, with just enough outer-space peril and oddball alien designs to make the mission feel exciting without turning grim. It’s not the choice for viewers craving Pixar-level emotional depth or cutting-edge animation, but if you want a light family watch that’s consistently upbeat and eager to entertain, this one earns its laughs.

Space Chimps is clearly trying to be a goofy, kid-friendly space adventure with wisecracking monkeys, bright alien worlds, and a simple “save the day” mission. The problem is the execution feels bargain-bin: the animation looks cheap even for its era, the story runs on autopilot, and the humor leans hard on monkey puns that get old fast. If you’re coming in expecting something clever or visually impressive in the post–WALL-E animation landscape, this will likely feel dated and thin. Still, very young kids who just want noisy slapstick, mild sci-fi peril, and constant motion may be perfectly content for 80 minutes.
