Renée Zellweger gives Beatrix Potter a quietly fierce spirit—tender, funny, and determined—while Ewan McGregor and Emily Watson bring a lived-in warmth that makes the relationships feel earned rather than manufactured. Chris Noonan films the Edwardian period with a painter’s eye, letting gentle humor, cozy details, and soft melancholy share the same frame, so even the sadder turns land with grace instead of gloom. If you prefer your biopics brisk and plot-heavy it may feel too delicate, but if you’re open to a heartfelt, visually lovely film about love, loss, and the courage to build a life from your own gifts, this one lingers like a favorite bedtime tale.

Miss Potter is clearly trying to be a warm, family-friendly portrait of Beatrix Potter, mixing gentle romance with a celebration of creativity and the comfort of her stories. The problem is it often feels airbrushed and overly sweet, smoothing down the messier edges of real life until the drama lands a bit soft and “frosted,” even when the film reaches for bigger emotions. Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor are likable and the period charm is soothing, but if you want a sharper biopic with bite, or a more substantial look at Potter’s inner world, this may feel lightweight. If you’re in the mood for a calm, sentimental tearjerker with pretty visuals and mild stakes, it does that job just fine.
