Rogue (2007)
When a group of tourists stumble into the remote Australian river territory of an enormous crocodile, the deadly creature traps them on a tiny mud island with the tide quickly rising and darkness descending. As the hungry predator closes in, they must fight for survival against all odds.
What people think about Rogue
Rogue is the kind of creature thriller that earns its scares the old-fashioned way: by making you feel the water, the darkness, and the shrinking margin of safety, long before it asks you to flinch. Greg McLean stages the Australian river wilderness as a gorgeous, hostile labyrinth, and the crocodile isn’t a gimmick but a heavy, believable presence that turns every decision into a gamble. Radha Mitchell and Michael Vartan give the panic a human pulse, keeping the film grounded even as the tension tightens and the set pieces land with crisp, nasty impact. It’s not for the squeamish (and it’s especially rough if you can’t handle animal peril), but if you want a polished, relentlessly suspenseful survival ride, this one snaps shut and doesn’t let go.
Rogue wants to be a lean, mean survival thriller that drops ordinary tourists into a worst-case scenario and squeezes tension out of a shrinking patch of mud and a very hungry crocodile. Greg McLean delivers some genuinely effective atmosphere early on, with solid location work and a few nasty jolts that remind you this is R-rated creature fare. The catch is that it’s pretty familiar stuff—if you’ve seen Jaws and a handful of “stranded with a monster” movies, you’ll likely predict the beats, and the later stretch leans more into routine action than escalating dread. If you’re after originality or deep character work, this may feel like competent B-movie comfort food; if you just want a brisk, grimy crocodile panic ride with a capable cast, it does the job.
