Knocked Up (2007)

Knocked Up is special because it somehow pulls off the magic trick of being riotously, shamelessly funny while still treating its characters like real people whose choices actually matter. Judd Apatow lets the raunch fly, but he also builds a surprisingly tender, lived-in vibe around two mismatched adults trying to grow up at the same speed, with Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl finding a prickly, believable chemistry that makes the comedy land harder. The movie’s best laughs come from uncomfortable truths—about ambition, immaturity, and what “support” really means—so the sweetness never feels pasted on, it’s earned. Fair warning: it’s very R-rated and proudly crude, but if you can roll with the language and the bodily honesty, you’ll get a comedy with a big heart and sharper insight than it has any right to.

Knocked Up is trying to mash a raunchy buddy-comedy vibe into a sincere “grow up and step up” romance, and when it hits, it’s genuinely funny and oddly warm. The problem is it’s shaggy and overlong, with scenes that meander like the movie can’t bear to cut a decent gag, so the pacing can drag even if you’re laughing. It also leans hard on mid-2000s gender dynamics and stoner-slacker wish fulfillment, which may read as dated or mildly sexist depending on your tolerance. If you want a tighter rom-com or a more thoughtful take on pregnancy and partnership, this may test your patience, but if you’re fine with crude talk, heavy weed humor, and a big-hearted mess, there’s enough charm to justify the runtime.
