Pride (2007)

Pride takes a familiar underdog-sports setup and gives it real muscle and meaning, not just in the victories but in the hard, day-to-day work of building dignity where a community has been told it doesn’t belong. Terrence Howard brings a coiled, compelling intensity to Coach Jim Ellis—part wounded idealist, part drill sergeant—while Bernie Mac adds warmth and bite that keeps the film human and funny in the right places. The vibe is gritty but uplifting, rooted in a specific Philadelphia reality where racism and street pressure aren’t abstract obstacles, they’re the air these kids breathe, which makes every inch of progress feel earned. If you’re allergic to inspirational-movie beats you’ll recognize the shape of it, but the sincerity, the likable young cast, and the emotional payoff make this one easy to cheer for.

Pride is clearly aiming for an uplifting, based-on-true-events sports drama about opportunity, community, and pushing back against racism, and it’s hard not to root for the mission. The problem is it follows the inspirational playbook so closely that you can often see the next beat coming a mile away, which blunts the emotional punch even when the subject deserves better. Terrence Howard brings real intensity and Bernie Mac adds welcome warmth, and the swim-team setting is refreshingly different from the usual football/basketball grind. If you’re tired of underdog-montage storytelling or want something with sharper surprises and less formula, this may feel routine; if you just want a sincere, PG-rated crowd-pleaser with a good message, it’ll do the job.
