Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006)
In March 2005, Neil Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. Four days before he was scheduled for a lifesaving operation, he headed to Nashville, where he wrote and recorded the country folk album Prairie Wind with old friends and family members. After the successful operation and recovery period, he returned to Nashville that August to play at the famed Ryman Auditorium, once again gathering together friends and family for this special performance.
What people think about Neil Young: Heart of Gold
Neil Young: Heart of Gold feels less like a standard concert film and more like being invited into a room where music is doing the work of prayer—quietly, honestly, and with a rare kind of grace. Jonathan Demme’s camera doesn’t just capture performances; it listens, finding the warmth in the Ryman Auditorium and the tenderness between old friends and family as songs land with the weight of lived experience. The vibe is intimate and gently mesmerizing, with a poignancy that comes from an artist staring down mortality and choosing to answer with melody instead of speeches. If you want spectacle and pyrotechnics, this isn’t that kind of night—but if you want a definitive, deeply human document of music as survival, it’s sensational.
Neil Young: Heart of Gold is clearly aiming to be a warm, intimate snapshot of an artist staring down a health scare and finding comfort in music, family, and a room full of trusted collaborators. If you’re expecting a punchy rock-doc with drama, big revelations, or high-energy pacing, this can feel sleepy and almost stubbornly low-key—more like sitting in on a gentle church of Neil than watching a “movie.” It’s also pretty niche: if Neil’s voice, vibe, and late-career country-folk lean don’t already work for you, the whole thing may register as an extended, pleasant bore-fest. That said, for fans (or anyone in the mood for something calm and sincere), the Ryman performance and the sense of gratitude running through it can be quietly moving.
