Waitress (2007)

Waitress is one of those small, disarming films that sneaks up on you: a cozy slice of Americana with a sharp, funny edge and a big, bruised heart. Adrienne Shelly’s direction finds poetry in everyday places—the clatter of a diner, the comfort of friendship, the way Keri Russell can let a single look carry a whole private storm—while the script keeps the tone buoyant without denying the harder truths underneath. The movie’s charm comes from its humane attention to people who feel stuck, and the way it uses romance and comedy not as escape hatches, but as sparks of possibility. Waitress is aiming for a sweet, offbeat comfort film about a woman reclaiming her life, using pie-making whimsy and small-town camaraderie as its sugar coating. The problem is that the tone can wobble between serious subject matter and sitcom-level quirk, which may feel naive or emotionally undercooked when you want the drama to land with more grace.
