For Your Consideration (2006)
The possibility of Oscar gold holds the cast and crew of an independent film in its grip after the performance of its virtually unknown, veteran star generates awards buzz.
What people think about For Your Consideration
For Your Consideration is Christopher Guest at his most deliciously observant, turning the faintest whiff of awards buzz into a full-blown comedy of manners where egos bloom, insecurities flare, and Hollywood’s self-mythology gets gently skewered. The joy is watching an expert ensemble improvise their way through escalating absurdity, with Catherine O’Hara giving a performance so funny and oddly tender you can feel the longing beneath every too-bright smile. The vibe is dry, cringe-adjacent, and warmly mean in the way the best satire is—laughing at the industry while still recognizing the very human hunger to be seen and validated. If you don’t click with Guest’s loose, mockumentary rhythm and secondhand-embarrassment humor it may not be your flavor, but if you do, it’s a sharply crafted little gem that gets funnier the closer it cuts.
For Your Consideration is Christopher Guest aiming his mockumentary lens at Hollywood vanity, awards-season hysteria, and the way decent people turn weird when a gold statue dangles in front of them. The problem is the satire often feels oddly polite: there are amusing moments and familiar Guest-style character quirks, but the movie can come off thin, a bit disjointed, and short on the big laughs you might expect from this cast. Catherine O’Hara and Harry Shearer do find flashes of poignancy under the comedy, and the industry in-jokes will land if you enjoy that world. If you’re hoping for the sharp bite and consistent hilarity of Guest’s best work, you may leave feeling like you sat through a rehearsal rather than the show.
