Bug (2007)

Bug is the rare horror-thriller that doesn’t rely on jump scares so much as it tightens a vise around your nerves, turning a shabby Oklahoma motel room into an entire universe of dread. William Friedkin directs with a lean, unblinking focus, and Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon meet the challenge with performances so committed you feel like you’re eavesdropping on something dangerously private. The vibe is sweaty, intimate, and claustrophobic—part psychological drama, part fever dream—where love, loneliness, and fear start feeding the same fire. It’s not for everyone, especially if you’re sensitive to graphic violence, nudity, and drug use, but if you want a film that gets under your skin and stays there, this one earns its reputation the hard way.

Bug is clearly trying to be a claustrophobic, actor-driven descent into shared paranoia, and William Friedkin commits hard to that pressure-cooker intensity. The problem is it’s essentially a two-hander that keeps tightening the same screws, so if you don’t buy into the central delusion early, the escalation can feel repetitive, shrill, and more exhausting than frightening. Its stage-play roots show in the single-room confinement and relentless dialogue, which some viewers will find hypnotic and others will find monotonous. Still, Ashley Judd and especially Michael Shannon are ferociously committed, so if you want a grim, intimate psychological spiral rather than a conventional horror-thriller with variety and release, this might hit; if you’re sensitive to self-harm imagery, gore, or sustained hysteria, steer clear.
