Noriko’s Dinner Table is special because it takes a lurid headline horror premise and turns it into something stranger, sadder, and more human: a hypnotic meditation on loneliness, performance, and how easily identity can be rented, traded, or erased. Sion Sono directs with bold, fragmented confidence, letting the film drift between intimate family drama and creeping nightmare until the two feel inseparable, and the result is as unsettling as it is oddly tender. The tone is dreamlike and corrosive—Tokyo as a neon maze where connection is always one screen name away and yet somehow impossibly distant—and the movie’s ambition keeps paying off in scenes that linger like bad memories. It’s not for everyone, especially if you’re sensitive to intense themes and graphic violence, but if you want a daring, genre-blending experience that feels genuinely original, this one earns your time.

Noriko’s Dinner Table is clearly trying to be a bleak, post-internet-age coming-of-age story that mutates into a commentary on loneliness, identity, and the performance of “family,” with Sion Sono pushing discomfort on purpose. The problem is it sprawls hard: it’s very long, often feels like it’s wandering in circles, and a lot of the “mystery” plays more like inevitability than suspense, so you may find yourself waiting for it to catch up to what you already suspect. The horror here is less about scares and more about emotional corrosion and brutal incidents, so if you’re expecting a tight thriller or consistent momentum, this will test your patience. Still, if you can handle the runtime and want an unsettling, idea-driven drama with a few genuinely striking sequences and a committed cast, it has a grim pull that’s hard to shake.
