Igor (2008)

Igor is a cheerfully twisted little animated fable that flips the usual “mad scientist” mythology on its hunchbacked head, finding real charm in a world where evil is basically a civic duty. The movie’s special sauce is its macabre, storybook look and its surprisingly warm heart: beneath the lightning bolts and doomsday gadgets, it’s about an underdog with big ideas, and the laughs come from how earnestly everyone commits to the gloom. John Cusack gives Igor a dry, likable weariness, and the supporting cast leans into the dark comedy—especially the rabbit sidekick whose immortality becomes a running gag that’s equal parts morbid and silly. It’s not for very young or sensitive kids (the imagery can get spooky and the humor can be a bit grim), but if you like your family animation with a mischievous Tim Burton-lite vibe and a sweet streak, this one’s an easy, entertaining watch.

Igor is clearly trying to be a kid-friendly Frankenstein spoof with a Tim Burton-ish goth vibe, mixing slapstick, songs, and a sweet “outsider follows his dream” message. The problem is it often feels like a grab bag of better movies: the story lurches from gag to plot point, the pacing is choppy, and the tone can’t decide if it’s for little kids, older kids, or adults who like dark comedy. The animation and voice work are serviceable but not especially sharp, so if you’re hoping for Pixar-level polish or genuinely clever satire, you’ll likely leave underwhelmed. That said, Eva’s wholesome monster energy and a few macabre jokes land, so it can work as a low-stakes, slightly spooky family watch if you’re not picky and you know what you’re getting.
