Hana (2006)
In a poor district of Edo lives a young samurai named Soza. He has been sent by his clan to avenge the death of his father. He isn't an accomplished swordsman however, and he prefers sharing the life of the residents, teaching the kids how to write etc. When he finally finds the man he is looking for, he will have to decide whether he follows the way of the samurai or chooses peace and reconciliation.
What people think about Hana
Hana takes the samurai movie and, with a sly grin and a generous heart, turns it into something rarer: a warm, lively portrait of everyday people where kindness can be as gripping as a swordfight. Set in a scruffy Edo neighborhood rendered with arresting, lived-in beauty, it follows a would-be avenger who’d rather teach children to write and share meals with his neighbors than posture like a legend. The tone is delightful and often genuinely hilarious, but the laughs land because the film is deeply human—rooting for compassion, community, and the messy courage it takes to choose a different path. If you’re expecting nonstop duels and stoic swagger, it may surprise you, but if you want a charming, humane twist on history that sneaks up on your emotions, this is an easy film to love.
Hana is clearly aiming for a gentle, offbeat samurai tale that questions revenge culture, mixing period drama with everyday village comedy and a more pacifist hero. The problem is it can feel shaggy and meandering, with long stretches where the plot drifts and the tension never really tightens into the kind of payoff you expect from an “avenging swordsman” setup. The humor is hit-or-miss and sometimes lands as awkward rather than charming, and if you want a driven, instantly likable lead, Soza’s passivity may test your patience. Still, if you’re in the mood for a slower, human-scale Edo story about community and second chances rather than slick action or big climaxes, it has a warm, thoughtful streak that might work for you.
