Hana (2006)

Hana is clearly aiming for a gentle, offbeat samurai tale that questions revenge culture, mixing period drama with everyday village comedy and a more pacifist hero. The problem is it can feel shaggy and meandering, with long stretches where the plot drifts and the tension never really tightens into the kind of payoff you expect from an “avenging swordsman” setup. The humor is hit-or-miss and sometimes lands as awkward rather than charming, and if you want a driven, instantly likable lead, Soza’s passivity may test your patience. Still, if you’re in the mood for a slower, human-scale Edo story about community and second chances rather than slick action or big climaxes, it has a warm, thoughtful streak that might work for you.
