School for Scoundrels is the kind of scruffy, underdog comedy that wins you over with sheer commitment to its premise: what if self-improvement became a competitive sport, and the coach was the biggest menace on the field? Jon Heder’s sweetly awkward sincerity makes Roger easy to root for, while Billy Bob Thornton turns every scene into a slyly mean masterclass in deadpan intimidation, giving the movie a mischievous, escalating energy. The romance angle keeps the story grounded, but the real pleasure is watching confidence lessons mutate into a petty, hilarious arms race of one-upmanship.
