School for Scoundrels (2006)
In the hope of winning the woman of his dreams, Amanda, lovelorn meter-reader Roger Wadell enrolls in a secret confidence-building class. The course's title takes on much more meaning when he discovers that his egomaniacal professor Dr. P also wants the same woman. They begin a fierce rivalry that quickly spirals out of control, their pranks and insults get uglier as they try to prove who is the ultimate guy's guy.
What people think about School for Scoundrels
School for Scoundrels is the kind of scruffy, underdog comedy that wins you over with sheer commitment to its premise: what if self-improvement became a competitive sport, and the coach was the biggest menace on the field? Jon Heder’s sweetly awkward sincerity makes Roger easy to root for, while Billy Bob Thornton turns every scene into a slyly mean masterclass in deadpan intimidation, giving the movie a mischievous, escalating energy. The romance angle keeps the story grounded, but the real pleasure is watching confidence lessons mutate into a petty, hilarious arms race of one-upmanship. It’s broad, a little nasty, and deliberately predictable in the way comfort-food comedies often are—if you like your laughs with a bite and your characters charmingly flawed, it’s a surprisingly enjoyable time.
School for Scoundrels is aiming for a scrappy underdog rom-com where a timid guy learns confidence and ends up in a ridiculous rivalry with his own teacher, and on paper that’s a solid setup. In practice, it often feels like a string of mean-spirited pranks and crude one-liners stitched together without much momentum, so if you’re hoping for clever banter or a warm romantic payoff, you may find it oddly flat. The talented cast can’t quite rescue material that leans formulaic and unfocused, with humor that lands more sour than sharp. If you like uncomfortable, abrasive comedy and don’t mind romance taking a back seat to petty escalation, you might get a few laughs; otherwise, your time is probably better spent elsewhere.
