The Hoax (2006)

The Hoax is one of those deliciously smart true-story capers that plays like a champagne comedy with a nervous pulse, watching ambition and audacity snowball into something too big to control. Richard Gere is terrific as Clifford Irving, charming enough to pull you in and frantic enough to make you feel the walls closing, while Alfred Molina brings a wonderfully human, funny edge to the partnership at the center of the scheme. Lasse Hallström keeps it brisk and buoyant, letting the satire land without turning the characters into cartoons, and the script has a knack for making publishing-world details feel like part of the thrill. If you want a heavy, moralizing drama about fraud, this isn’t that—but if you’re in the mood for a clever, well-acted ride about self-invention and the seductions of a good story, it’s an easy recommendation.

The Hoax wants to be a slick, darkly funny caper about ambition, ego, and the media’s willingness to believe a good story, and it has the cast and early momentum to sell that idea. The problem is it often feels oddly loose and unfinished, as if it’s racing through the con while sidestepping the sharper consequences that would make it truly bite. If you’re coming for a tight true-story drama or a historically grounded portrait of the real people involved, the liberties and characterizations may irritate you more than they entertain. Still, Richard Gere and Alfred Molina bring enough charm and nervous energy to make it watchable if you’re in the mood for a breezy, fact-flexible tale rather than a definitive account.
