Grindhouse (2007)
Grindhouse combines Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror, a horror comedy about a group of survivors who battle zombie-like creatures, and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, an action thriller about a murderous stuntman who kills young women with modified vehicles. It is presented as a double feature with fictitious exploitation trailers preceding each segment.
What people think about Grindhouse
Grindhouse is a love letter to the scrappy, sweaty glory of 1970s exploitation cinema, made with the kind of craft and swagger that turns “throwback” into a full-body experience. Rodriguez’s Planet Terror plays like a midnight-movie fever dream—gory, absurd, and gleefully inventive—while Tarantino’s Death Proof tightens the screws with talky tension that erupts into some of the most exhilarating car mayhem of the decade. What really seals the deal is the presentation: the fake trailers and intentionally scuffed-up aesthetics create a whole carnival of pulp, wit, and panache that feels communal, like you’re in on the joke with the filmmakers. It’s not for viewers who want subtlety or restraint, but if you’re craving something loud, funny, nasty, and undeniably fun, this double feature is pure cinematic junk-food bliss.
Grindhouse is clearly trying to resurrect the scuzzy, hyper-stylized thrill of old exploitation double-features, complete with fake trailers, scratches, and deliberately trashy attitude. The problem is that the joke can wear thin: it’s long, intentionally repetitive, and sometimes feels more like two directors showing off their reference library than telling stories you’ll actually care about. If you don’t enjoy intentionally “bad” aesthetics, indulgent pacing, or genre in-jokes that reward film-nerd patience, this can come off as contrived and, yes, a bit pointless. That said, there are real highs—some gleefully nasty set pieces, strong performers, and a couple of sequences that absolutely deliver if you’re on its wavelength.
