Daddy Day Camp (2007)

Daddy Day Camp has the easy, sunny charm of a backyard summer: scrappy kids, big-hearted adults, and a story that roots for the underdog without asking you to think too hard. Cuba Gooding Jr. brings an earnest, likable energy to a dad who’s trying to give his son the childhood he missed, and the movie’s warmest laughs come from watching a ragtag camp slowly turn into a real community. Director Fred Savage keeps the vibe broad and bouncy, leaning into slapstick and a few gross-out gags, so if you prefer your comedy subtle, this may not be your flavor. But if you’re in the mood for a light family watch with a feel-good payoff and plenty of kid-chaos antics, it’s a pleasantly uncomplicated good time.

Daddy Day Camp is clearly trying to deliver a sunny, kid-friendly underdog story about rebuilding a ramshackle camp and a father learning to show up for his son. The problem is it leans hard on loud slapstick and bodily-function gags, with a paint-by-numbers plot you can see coming from the first scene, so adults hoping for clever comedy will feel like they’re doing time. Cuba Gooding Jr. brings some likable energy and there are a few sweet, earnest moments, but the writing and pacing rarely rise above “extended sitcom episode.” If your family enjoys broad, messy humor and doesn’t mind predictable lessons, it might pass an afternoon; if you want the charm of the original Daddy Day Care or anything remotely sharp, skip it.
