Enchanted (2007)

Enchanted is special because it doesn’t just parody classic Disney fairy tales—it lovingly collides them with modern Manhattan and finds real sweetness in the sparks that fly. The movie’s greatest magic trick is Amy Adams, who plays Giselle with such sincere, radiant charm that even the most cynical New Yorker (and viewer) starts to soften, and the songs are catchy in that “you’ll be humming them later” way without feeling like homework. It’s bright, funny, and surprisingly smart about romance, letting the fantasy be delightful while still winking at how messy real life can be. If you truly can’t stand musical numbers or prefer your fairy tales strictly ironic, it may not convert you—but if you want a warm, clever crowd-pleaser that works for kids and adults alike, this one earns its happily-ever-after.

Enchanted is clearly trying to be a loving, self-aware Disney mashup—half fairy-tale musical, half fish-out-of-water rom-com—and when it’s leaning into that premise, it’s genuinely charming. Amy Adams sells the wide-eyed sincerity so well that you’ll forgive a lot, and James Marsden is surprisingly funny as the “perfect prince” played straight. That said, the movie is pretty predictable, the tone can wobble between sharp parody and gooey sincerity, and the big finale veers into noisy spectacle that doesn’t feel as clever as what came before. If you’re allergic to sentimentality, corporate winks at Disney tropes, or you want a romance with real bite rather than a warm hug, this one may feel like it’s coasting on cuteness.
