Cashback (2007)
After a painful breakup, Ben develops insomnia. To kill time, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket, where his artistic imagination runs wild.
What people think about Cashback
Cashback turns a humble night shift in a fluorescent supermarket into something strangely beautiful: a romantic daydream about how heartbreak can warp time, and how art can stitch it back together. Sean Ellis directs with a glossy, confident polish, letting Ben’s insomniac imagination glide between wry workplace comedy and tender longing, so the movie feels both gently funny and quietly aching. Its best moments are less about plot mechanics than about mood—elegant imagery, soft snowglobe wonder, and the sensation of noticing someone in a crowded room and suddenly seeing the world differently. Fair warning: it’s frequently and explicitly nude in a way that’s meant to be sensual and contemplative rather than crude, but if that’s a dealbreaker, you’ll want to steer clear; if not, it’s an offbeat, charming romance with a surprisingly sincere heart.
Cashback is aiming for a dreamy, artsy rom-com about heartbreak, insomnia, and finding beauty in the mundane, using its “stopping time” gimmick as a metaphor for being stuck emotionally. The problem is that the film’s gaze is often less poetic than it thinks it is, leaning heavily on frequent nudity and a protagonist’s sketchbook fascination with women in ways that can feel adolescent, objectifying, and frankly distracting from the supposed tenderness. Character work and romance are pretty thin, so if you need emotional realism or a genuinely earned love story, this may come off as shallow and self-satisfied. If you can tolerate (or are unbothered by) the nudity and want a stylized mood piece with occasional wit and a few genuinely pretty visual ideas, you might still find it watchable in a late-night, don’t-think-too-hard way.
