Johanna Wokalek gives a quietly ferocious performance, making Johanna’s intelligence and resilience feel earned rather than mythic, while the film surrounds her with a textured medieval world of faith, politics, and hard-won learning. Sönke Wortmann keeps the tone serious and engrossing, with romance and danger braided in just enough to make the journey feel human instead of ceremonial, and John Goodman brings a surprising warmth and weight to the Vatican’s corridors of power. It’s not a light watch—there’s brutality and frankness that come with the era—but if you want an inspiring, beautifully mounted legend about identity and ambition, it’s an easy film to fall into.

Pope Joan clearly wants to be a sweeping, inspirational medieval epic about a brilliant woman outsmarting a brutal world and breaking into the Vatican’s inner circle. The problem is that it often plays like a solemn lecture dressed in costumes: the dialogue can feel preachy and the drama oddly flat, so big turning points arrive without the emotional punch they’re aiming for. If you’re hoping for sharp political intrigue, believable character psychology, or a grounded historical feel, this may come off more like polished legend than convincing history. That said, the production design and period atmosphere are respectable, and Johanna Wokalek gives the role real sincerity—just don’t expect the film to match its premise with equal momentum.
